Students Become California Explorers!

Our students really transformed into California Explorers for their social studies exploration unit! The students wrote journals in the first person point of view to explain the challenges and successes of the explorers who discovered parts of California. Then, students came to school dresses as their explorers to be exhibits in our "museum!" Each student gave a speech as parents and students "visited" our museum. The students said their favorite part was giving the speeches because they really felt like they were the explorer! It made learning come alive for them and they loved having other students come visit the museum to see what we have been learning! What a great adventure!

Students Attend Missionary Childhood Association Mass at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

Nine of our students attended the Missionary Childhood Association Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Students participated along side other Catholic schools who came from near and far to celebrate together. The Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Gomez, took place inside the beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Students were able to soak in the amazing tapestries on the wall and the stunning architecture of the building. It was a blessing to take part in this day with so many other young Catholics!

Mission Elementary Students Honorably Represent

Job well done! to our Mission students who represented the elementary school at a Veterans Recognition luncheon hosted by San Gabriel's Rotary International Club and the City of San Gabriel. At an event attended by over one hundred community members, our scouts from troops including Mission Troop 261, presented the Color Guard at the opening ceremonies for the event. In addition, hand written "Thank You" cards were made and presented to veterans who attended the event, active military members, and the families who represented veterans who have passed. We are so proud of our scouts as they represented our school honorably!

International Day of Prayer for Peace - September 21

We would like to share a special message from Sister Carolyn Marie Monahan, O.P. (past Principal at Mission Elementary) to our teachers and staff.

Dear Friends - as we pray together for peace in our communities, our country and our world, know that I am so very grateful to each of you for the many ways you are teaching peace as a living reality in your schools. You encounter so many challenges throughout the days and seek ways to model peace and teach peace as a how we can best live together. May the children you teach today be the peacemakers of the future!

As I was going through files, I found the attached sheet of quotes - Children thinking about peace. Perhaps it can spark some thoughts among your own children. My favorite comes from Robert Fulghum . . . remember the fellow who reminded us that all we really need to know we learned in kindergarten!! I cannot read it without a smile and hope that peace could be this contagious!

Special gratitude and prayer for each of you today - Sister Carolyn Marie

HAPPY 105th BIRTHDAY! San Gabriel Mission Elementary

Students enjoyed ice cream sandwiches today as we celebrated the founding and "birthday" of our school. Over 100 years ago, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose came to Mission San Gabriel Arcangel to open a school for the families living around the Mission. Today, 105 years later, the Dominican Sisters are still serving their community through our school. San Gabriel Mission Elementary has had over 11,000 students walk through our school halls since 1912. We are grateful for our students, our families, our parish supporters, our alumni, and the community for allowing us to bring our academic program to the San Gabriel Valley.
